What types of Pokémon are there?
Since it's inception, the Pokémon company has introduced over 1000 creatures to collect, raise and battle with. Currently, there are 1008 individual Pokémon with well over 400 different item cards that help buff your creatures. Each card ranges in rarity based on a variety of things such as expansion set they belong to, grade, whether or not they are holographic and much more.
Rare Pokémon Cards
While these are incredibly rare, early release Pokémon cards that fetch huge sums of cash, each set has particular rare cards that can be found in booster packs. A good example from the most recent Astral Radiance and Brilliant Star expansions include things like Rainbow Rare VSTAR Charizard, and alternate art Charizard V and Machamp V, which are listed on auction sites at over $100. Other recent notable mentions are;

Current Pokémon Booster Packs
The Pokémon company releases a few expansions (new card sets) every year. These new releases usually have new Pokémon to collect or new variants and versions of old Pokémon. While print run numbers are usually held secret, dozens of cards from each expansion release usually end up on the top of the auction house and sell for quite the sum of money. These cards are usually powerful and would be welcomed in any Pokémon deck.
While Pokémon Starter Packs come with a good base for the new expansion, it is recommend to get set up with a booster pack subscription to ensure you get all the cards in the series, as the Starter Pack will never have all of the cards in the series present.
